“Alien Nature – A Collection of Extraterrestrial Curiosities”
This collection of brooches was entered in the Polymer Week 2025 Awards and won second place. The theme of the challenge was “The Nature of Clay”. Having grown up in the 1950’s and watching “The Twilight Zone” and other Sci-Fy features I came up with “Alien Nature – A Collection of Extraterrestrial Curiosities”. Are they flora or fauna? Is the bed they rest on lava, sea floor, moon surface? I’ll let the viewer decide! These tiny Polymer sculptures are lightly accented with mica powder for subtle sheen. Argentium sterling silver wire was used to create the brooch clasp. The back of each brooch holds a special feature because I believe the reverse side of a brooch should be as interesting as the front side! The base upon which the brooches sit is metallic copper polymer clay over an armature of aluminum foil. After baking, a sprinkling of Bronze Ice Enamel Resin was applied and melted with a heat gun. All are contained in a black polypropylene tray.
